Summary:   High school students in this study were questioned concerning a variety of matters related to politics and government. These include attitudes toward democracy, citizen rights and responsibilities, political trust, and political efficacy. Opinions were also sought on government performance in a number of more specific areas such as education and the economy. Knowledge of and attitudes toward the Watergate affair were given special attention. A series of questions probing students' knowledge of politics and current events was also included. Students' self-image, trust in people and feelings of control over one's life were also investigated. Additional variables include parents' education and employment, student activities in and out of school, and student plans for and expectations of the future.

Data Collection Notes:

Data has been verified as having correct number of records. However, some deck identification numbers appear to be in error. Therefore, sorting of data by respondent and deck identification numbers may not be advisable.

Sample:   Representative sample of Pennsylvania high schools. Number of students interviewed in each school was adjusted according to size of school and community. Sample was drawn so as to ensure that small towns and rural areas contain enough students for separate analysis and that both academic and vocational high schools were included.
