Summary View help for Summary
This round of Euro-Barometer surveys departed from the usual emphasis on the European Community and focused on public attitudes toward the role of science in modern life, the relationship between science and government, and respondents' future priorities in scientific research. The study is a supplement to EURO-BAROMETER 7: SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY IN THE EUROPEAN COMMUNITY, APRIL 1977 (ICPSR 7612) with many similar topics. The survey also includes standard demographic information for each respondent, such as occupation, age, and sex, as well as occupation of head of household, and composition of household. In addition to the survey itself, the ICPSR version of the study contains a constructed index on left-right partisan support. Euro-Barometer 10A contains data gathered from representative samples of respondents aged 15 or older interviewed in each of the nine nations of the EC (Germany, Great Britain, Denmark, Italy, France, Belgium, Luxembourg, Ireland, and the Netherlands) in October- November 1978.

-
The text of the British questionnaire was used in constructing the codebook. Notes on deviations in translation are included only for the standard demographic variables and are based on questionnaires from EURO-BAROMETER 10 (carried out at the same time). Although theses notes are probably accurate, it is possible that other minor discrepancies between questionnaires and the various countries have gone undetected.
-
In order to produce samples more representative of the French, Dutch, British, and Danish populations, a national weight variable was constructed for those nations.
-
The survey was conducted by Institut Francais D'Opinion Publique (IFOP), Paris, France.

The sampling designs were either multistage national probability samples (Belgium, Denmark, and the Netherlands) or national stratified quota samples (France, Germany, Great Britain [including Northern Ireland], Italy, Ireland, and Luxembourg).

2015-05-28 The SPSS setup files were updated to conform to current standards. SAS and Stata setup files, as well as SPSS and Stata system files, a SAS transport (CPORT) file, a R data file, a tab-delimited data file, and a PDF codebook have been added to the collection.
1984-06-27 ICPSR data undergo a confidentiality review and are altered when necessary to limit the risk of disclosure. ICPSR also routinely creates ready-to-go data files along with setups in the major statistical software formats as well as standard codebooks to accompany the data. In addition to these procedures, ICPSR performed the following processing steps for this data collection:
- Performed consistency checks.
- Standardized missing values.
- Checked for undocumented or out-of-range codes.
Weight View help for Weight
The data are not weighted, however, the data contain one weight variable V3 (WEIGHT) that users may wish to apply during analysis.
