Summary: This data collection is a record of the types and amount of use, including both outdoor recreation and conservation and/or environmental education, which occurred in all four seasons of 1976-1977 at Kentucky's Land Between the Lakes (LBL) National Recreation Area (which was administered at that time by the Tennessee Valley Authority). The survey was designed so that estimates of use could be revised annually for a three- to five-year period following the calibration year. The collection consists of two files of data. Part 1 contains data for 6,489 groups/persons who were interviewed with a specific and/or a general survey instrument as their vehicles exited the LBL. Variables measure recreationists' length of stay, types of activities pursued, attitudes and preferences about LBL management, ages, and occupation of the head of household. Part 2 consists of daily vehicle counts obtained by mechanical traffic counters for the entire year-long sampling period. There are 3,585 records representing counts from various exit points for each day of the study.

Data Collection Notes:

Part 1 contains data from both a specific and a general survey. Documentation indicates that not all those interviewed responded to the general questionnaire. Since respondents are not uniquely identified, it is not possible to match general data with specific data by respondent.

Sample: Stratified random sampling, with varying ratio of visitors, based on exiting traffic flow. In Part 1, groups passing through checkpoints were selected systematically in inverse proportion to the amount of traffic exiting the area. Beginning with a randomly selected group, every nth group was interviewed, n being determined by traffic flow. The driver of the vehicle (or head of household) was interviewed using both a general and a specific survey instrument. At the exit checkpoint it was determined if the group had completed its trip and if it had already been interviewed. Only time not accounted for by other surveys and interviews was counted in the survey data. Part 2, the vehicle axle count, was obtained to establish a relationship between use and the traffic-flow pattern.
