This data collection contains raw and percentagized returns for the first two elections held in Portugal since the revolution in 1974 -- the election of new members to the Portuguese Constituent Assembly on April 23, 1975, and the election of members to the Portuguese National Assembly on April 25, 1976. The election returns were originally published in ELEICAO PARA A ASSEMBLEIA DA REPUBLICA - 1976: RESULTADOS POR FREGUESIAS, CONCELHOS, E DISTRITOS, COMPARADOS COM OS DE 1975 by the Technical Secretariat under the auspices of the Ministry of Internal Administrations. The file contains data for national-, district-, council-, and parish-level units, including the number of registered voters, the total number of voters and non-voters, and the votes received by the 17 political parties in the elections of 1975 and 1976. The file also contains data indicating the percentage of voters and non-voters and of votes for each party.

1975 -- 1976
  1. (1) The data file is hierarchical and contains four types of records: a national-level record, a record for each of 22 districts (distritos), 303 council- (concelhos) level records, and approximately 4,000 parish- (freguesias) level records. The unit-type code variable (V1) can be used to identify or stratify a particular type of record. The other identification variables -- district number (V2), council number (V3), and parish number (V4) -- can be used to identify each record. For example, each district is assigned a unique district code with council and parish codes equal to 0. Each council has a district and unique council code with a parish code of 0. And each parish has been assigned a unique code. The code for the national-level record is 00(V2), 000(V3), and 0000(V4). (See variable descriptions for additional information.) (2) Both the percentage and raw vote variables are seven-columns wide and have a missing-data code of 9999999.
