Summary

This study is a collection of economic and occupational data obtained from original manuscript returns for the 1850 and 1860 United States censuses. Separate random samples of individuals with listed occupations were drawn from both censuses for each the following four Midwestern cities: Chicago, Illinois, Cincinnati, Ohio, Galena, Illinois, and Indianapolis, Indiana. Variables include age, sex, occupation, value of real property and personal property owned, and place of birth.

  1. The data file includes eight text lines delimiting the eight data subsections, by city and census year.

  2. Although the original documentation states that the 1850 Census only records occupations for males, the 1850 data contain several cases coded as females.

Sample

Eight separate random samples were drawn of individuals residing in Chicago, Illinois, Cincinnati, Ohio, Galena, Illinois, and Indianapolis, Indiana, for whom occupations were listed in the 1850 and 1860 United States censuses.

Universe

Employed persons aged 15 and older who resided in Chicago, Illinois, Cincinnati, Ohio, Galena, Illinois, and Indianapolis, Indiana in 1850 and/or 1860.
