Universe:   All families living in dwellings in the coterminous United States, exclusive of those on military reservations or group quarters such as rooming houses or institutions.

Data Types:   survey data

Sample:   Stratified representative sampling. The entire sampling area was divided into 74 strata. A metropolitan area was then chosen from each stratum by a controlled selection procedure ensuring representation of that stratum. Within each selection, cities, towns, suburban areas, and dwelling units were chosen for the sample. Eligible respondents were family heads and their wives

Extent of Processing:  ICPSR data undergo a confidentiality review and are altered when necessary to limit the risk of disclosure. ICPSR also routinely creates ready-to-go data files along with setups in the major statistical software formats as well as standard codebooks to accompany the data. In addition to these procedures, ICPSR performed the following processing steps for this data collection:
