The intent of this panel study was to provide data for the analysis of electoral behavior in the Federal Republic of Germany, focusing on the federal elections of November 1972. The survey was administered in four waves, three before and one immediately following the election. In addition to personal background information, the study ascertained the respondents' perceptions of the political parties and the candidates, their views on the economy and on economic and price policy, as well as their opinions on foreign policy, including Ostpolitik (Federal Republic of Germany chancellor Willy Brandt's strategy of peacefully moving toward the reunification of the two Germanys through increased contact and exchange of information). Demographic variables include age, marital status, education, and occupation.

A total of 165 variables out of 732 in this study were restricted for use by the principal investigators. The restricted variables include those pertaining to the party identification of the respondents and their parents and spouses, perceptions of the economy, opinions on price politics, and perceptions of the political parties and candidates, in particular the semantic differentials on Brandt and CDU leader Rainer Barzel. Users interested in these variables may contact the principal investigators.
