This study combined information from mail questionnaires returned by a sample of teaching hospitals in the United States and Canada during 1959-1960 and data on these hospitals from published reference sources. The variables deal with the environmental setting of the hospitals, their administrative structure and size, the diffusion of innovation, and the stratification within these organizations.
One or more data files in this study are set up in a non-standard format, such as card image format. Users may need help converting these files before they can be used for analysis.
These data are available only to users at ICPSR member institutions. Because you are not logged in, we cannot verify that you will be able to download the data.

Scope of Study
Date of Collection:
Universe: Teaching hospitals in the United States and Canada.
Data Types: aggregate data, survey data
mailback questionnaires sent out by the American Hospital Association in 1959 and by the American Medical Association in 1960, and the 1951 and 1960 Guide issues of HOSPITALS, published by the American Hospital Association
Extent of Processing: ICPSR data undergo a confidentiality review and are altered when necessary to limit the risk of disclosure. ICPSR also routinely creates ready-to-go data files along with setups in the major statistical software formats as well as standard codebooks to accompany the data. In addition to these procedures, ICPSR performed the following processing steps for this data collection:
- Standardized missing values.
Original ICPSR Release: 1984-05-03
