Voter News Service General Election Exit Polls, 1996 (ICPSR 6989)

Summary:
For this data collection, interviews were conducted with voters in the 50 states and the District of Columbia as they left their polling places on Election Day, November 5th, 1996. Respondents were asked a series of questions about their vote choices in the Senate, congressional, and gubernatorial races (as appropriate to their state), and the issues and factors that most influenced those votes. Additional topics covered President Bill Clinton's land use policies, Clinton's role in Whitewater, environmental issues, immigration, abortion, Medicare, the budget deficit and taxes, same-sex marriages, tobacco industry, the death penalty, and approval ratings for Clinton, Newt Gingrich, and Congress. Demographic information was collected on sex, race, age, religion, education, political party identification, and family income.

Methodology
Sample: In each state, a sample of exit poll precincts was drawn. Respondents in these precincts were given a "state" questionnaire. However, a subsample of these precincts was selected to be part of the national sample. In this subsample, respondents were given a "National" questionnaire. Because the national questionnaire has several items in common with the state questionnaire, national respondents are included in the state exit poll datasets for these common questions.

Extent of Processing: ICPSR data undergo a confidentiality review and are altered when necessary to limit the risk of disclosure. ICPSR also routinely creates ready-to-go data files along with setups in the major statistical software formats as well as standard codebooks to accompany the data. In addition to these procedures, ICPSR performed the following processing steps for this data collection:

- 2011-08-25 Documentation has been updated.
- 2011-07-06 SAS, SPSS and Stata setups have been added to this data collection. Also, data files for parts 29 to 33 were incorrectly labeled. Therefore, the names of the data files were corrected.
- 2006-01-12 All files were removed from dataset 53 and flagged as study-level files, so that they will accompany all downloads.
