Principal Investigator(s): ABC News
This special topic poll sought respondents' views on the O.J. Simpson murder trial verdict and its effect on the country. Those queried were asked for their opinions on media coverage of the case, motivations for that coverage, and whether other news stories were abandoned to cover the Simpson case in depth. Respondents were asked to comment on television cameras in courtrooms and the effect the Simpson trial had on race relations in the United States. Demographic variables include sex and race.

Scope of Study
Smallest Geographic Unit: state
Geographic Coverage: United States
Date of Collection:
Unit of Observation: individual
Universe: Adults 18 years of age and older in the United States.
Data Types: survey data
Sample: Households were selected by random-digit dialing. Within households, the respondent selected was the adult living in the household who last had a birthday and who was at home at the time of the interview.
Weight: A weight variable with two decimal places has been included and must be used in any analysis.
Mode of Data Collection: telephone interview
Extent of Processing: ICPSR data undergo a confidentiality review and are altered when necessary to limit the risk of disclosure. ICPSR also routinely creates ready-to-go data files along with setups in the major statistical software formats as well as standard codebooks to accompany the data. In addition to these procedures, ICPSR performed the following processing steps for this data collection:
- Created variable labels and/or value labels.
- Checked for undocumented or out-of-range codes.
Original ICPSR Release: 1998-05-20
- 2012-10-24 The data have been converted from ASCII card-image format to ASCII column-delimited format and the variables identifying the deck number, and the respondent number on decks 2 and 3 were deleted. SPSS, SAS, and Stata setup files, as well as SPSS and Stata system files, a SAS transport (CPORT) file, and a tab-delimited ASCII data file have been added to the collection. The codebook has been updated.
