Summary

This study, a follow-up to the BRITISH ELECTION STUDY: [JUNE] 1983 (ICPSR 8409), was undertaken to describe and explain the outcome of the 1987 general election in Great Britain. The investigators sought to measure the magnitude and causes of the erosion of enduring support for the two major British political parties, the changing relationship between social stratification and electoral behavior, the pattern and sources of short-term voting change, and the division of opinion over major political issues and their relationships to the party division of the vote. Questions were posed regarding voting behavior in 1987 and general social and political attitudes. Numerous replications of measures used in the 1983 British Election Study were included.

  1. (1) These data were provided to ICPSR by the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) Archive, University of Essex, England. The data are disseminated, under an agreement with the ESRC, exactly as they were received without modification by ICPSR. This agreement also provides that ICPSR will disseminate the data only for use within its member institutions. (2) The codebook is provided by ICPSR as a Portable Document Format (PDF) file. The PDF file format was developed by Adobe Systems Incorporated and can be accessed using PDF reader software, such as the Adobe Acrobat Reader. Information on how to obtain a copy of the Acrobat Reader is provided on the ICPSR Web site.

Of the 250 constituencies sampled in ICPSR 8409, 115 were selected for the panel. After the deletion of unsuccessfully interviewed respondents and those unwilling to be reinterviewed, 1,633 names were issued to interviewers for the first (1986) wave of the panel. For the second (1987) wave, 1,021 names were issued, consisting of respondents to the first wave less those who were unwilling to be reinterviewed.
