Summary View help for Summary
This collection provides information on live births in the United States during the calendar year 2001. The natality data in these files are a component of the vital statistics collection effort maintained by the federal government of the United States. Dataset 1 contains data on births occurring within the United States to United States residents and nonresidents, while Dataset 2 includes data on births occurring in the United States territories of Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands, Guam, American Samoa, and the Northern Mariana Islands. Variables specify place of birth, race and sex of the child, weight at birth and Apgar score, birth order, number of other children born alive or dead, and person in attendance. Medical and health data such as the number of prenatal visits, tobacco and alcohol use during pregnancy, method of delivery, medical risk factors, and infant health characteristics are also provided. Demographic variables include mother's and father's age, race, and ethnicity, as well as the mother's place of birth, marital status, and level of education. Birth and fertility rates, and other statistics related to this study can be found in the National Vital Statistics Report included in the "Original ICPSR Codebook, 2007 Release".

Restrictions View help for Restrictions
In preparing the data files for this collection, the National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS) removed direct identifiers and characteristics that might lead to identification of data subjects. As an additional precaution, NCHS requires, under Section 308(d) of the Public Health Service Act (42 U.S.C. 242m), that data collected by NCHS not be used for any purpose other than statistical analysis and reporting. NCHS further requires that analysts not use the data to learn the identity of any persons or establishments and that the director of NCHS be notified if any identities are inadvertently discovered. ICPSR member institutions and other users ordering data from ICPSR are expected to adhere to these restrictions.

To prevent the inadvertent disclosure of individuals and institutions, the files for 1989 and later years do not contain the actual day of the birth or the dates of birth of the mother or father. The geographic detail is also restricted; only counties, cities and metropolitan areas of 100,000 or more population based on the 1990 Census are identified.

2015-08-06 SPSS, SAS, and Stata setup files, as well as SPSS and Stata system files, SAS transport (CPORT) files, tab-delimited data files, and an R data file have been added to the collection. Due to the large file size, an R dataset could not be produced for DS1: United States File, but it is provided for DS2: United States Territories File. The codebook was updated.
2007-05-22 ICPSR data undergo a confidentiality review and are altered when necessary to limit the risk of disclosure. ICPSR also routinely creates ready-to-go data files along with setups in the major statistical software formats as well as standard codebooks to accompany the data. In addition to these procedures, ICPSR performed the following processing steps for this data collection:
- Standardized missing values.
- Checked for undocumented or out-of-range codes.
Weight View help for Weight
One record weight - variable RECWT - is included, with a constant value of '1', reflecting the fact that starting in 1985 the natality detail file for each individual year contains data on a 100 percent basis from all reporting areas.
