This annual survey, fielded May to August 2005, was conducted in 67 countries and the province of Kosovo to solicit public opinion on social and political issues. Respondents were asked to identify the most important problem facing the world, how often they or their family had not had enough to eat in the past year, whether they had heard of global institutions such as the United Nations and the European Union, and whether their opinions of these institutions were positive, negative, or neutral. A series of questions asked respondents whether their country was governed by the will of the people, whether its elections were free and fair, whether they trusted their government, and whether democracy was the best system of government. Additional topics addressed crime in the respondent's community, threats to the environment, the gap between the rich and the poor, and whether immigration was a good or a bad thing for their country. Other questions asked whether respondents had done any volunteer work in the past year, and whether they considered themselves to be religious. Demographic variables include sex, age, household income, education level, employment status, and religious preference.

- (1) The data available for download are not weighted and users will need to weight the data prior to analysis. (2) Sample type, weights, and mode of collection vary by country, and detailed weighting information was unavailable for 20 countries in this survey. Please refer to the codebook for additional information on sampling, interviewing, weighting, and collection modes for each country. (3) More information about Voice of the People surveys can be found on the Gallup International Association Web site. (4) The subpopulation referred to in the Kosovo sample included all ethnic minorities who use the Albanian language for public and social purposes except Kosovo Serbs. (5) According to the data collection instrument, income categories in the variable INGRE are as follows: Low (Bottom quintile/20%), Medium low (Second quintile/20%), Medium (Third quintile/20%), Medium high (Fourth quintile/20%), and High (Top quintile/20%). (6) For several countries, the sample sizes listed in the original documentation received from Gallup differ from the actual sample sizes in the data. (7) In the variable COUNTRY, code 54 (KOR) referred to South Korea, code 61 (VNM) referred to the Socialist Republic of Vietnam, and code 22 (KVO) referred to Kosovo, which was a province of Serbia at the time of the survey. (8) Not all questions were asked in Luxembourg, Egypt, Singapore, Columbia, and the Socialist Republic of Vietnam. Therefore, data for these countries were missing in several variables. (9) The CASEID variable was created for use with online analysis.

The survey was conducted in 67 countries and the province of Kosovo, with a minimal sample size of 500 per country. Within each country, a nationally representative sample of at least 500 adults, male and female, aged 18 and over was used. In some emergent countries, where such research conditions were not possible, there were stated variations to this (e.g., urban areas only). Similarly, in the developed world, interviews were conducted by telephone, Web survey, or self-completed questionnaires, while in emergent and underdeveloped countries, face-to-face interviews were conducted.

2007-07-16 ICPSR data undergo a confidentiality review and are altered when necessary to limit the risk of disclosure. ICPSR also routinely creates ready-to-go data files along with setups in the major statistical software formats as well as standard codebooks to accompany the data. In addition to these procedures, ICPSR performed the following processing steps for this data collection:

Weight View help for Weight
The data contain a weight variable (WEIGHT) that should be used in analyzing the data. Weighting schemes vary by country, and the following countries did not apply weights to their data: Bosnia and Hercegovina, Colombia, Dominican Republic, Egypt, Greece, Guatemala, India, Indonesia, Kenya, Pakistan, Panama, Paraguay, Philippines, the Socialist Republic of Vietnam, Spain, Turkey, Ukraine, Uruguay, and Venezuela. Of the countries that weighted their data, ICPSR did not receive an explanation of the weights used in Austria, Bulgaria, Canada, Ecuador, Ethiopia, Finland, Ghana, Ireland, Japan, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Mexico, Nicaragua, Peru, Portugal, Serbia, Singapore, South Africa, Togo, and the United Kingdom. According to the principal investigator, the weighting factor for countries without a specified weight was the population represented by the sample.
