Summary:   The International Social Survey Program (ISSP) is an ongoing program of cross-national collaboration. Formed in 1983, the ISSP group develops topical modules dealing with important areas of social science as supplements to regular national surveys. This data collection is the second survey exploring the topic of environment (please see INTERNATIONAL SOCIAL SURVEY PROGRAM: ENVIRONMENT I, 1993 [ICPSR 6640] for the data from the initial survey on the same topic). Participating countries in the 2000 survey included Austria, Bulgaria, Canada, Chile, Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, Germany, Great Britain, Ireland, Israel, Japan, Latvia, Mexico, Netherlands, New Zealand, Northern Ireland, Norway, Philippines, Portugal, Russia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, and the United States. Respondents were queried on topics regarding nature and the environment, the role of science and scientific solutions to environmental problems, the effects of population and economic growth on the environment, protection of the environment through higher prices of goods or higher taxes, and the role of government, businesses, industries, and citizens in protecting the environment. Respondents were asked if they belonged to any groups whose main aim was to preserve or protect the environment, if they donated any money to environmental groups, and if they had ever protested, demonstrated, or signed a petition concerning environmental issues. Respondents were also asked questions about the greenhouse effect, the use of animals for medical testing, and health issues like exposure to chemicals, pesticides, and pollution. Respondents also expressed their views on the priorities of their nation. Demographics include sex, age, ethnicity or nationality, marital status, level of education, current employment status, family income, number of people living in household, religious denomination, trade union membership, political party affiliation, and region of the country and size of community where currently residing.

Universe:   Persons aged 18 years and older living in the countries Austria, Bulgaria, Canada, Czech Republic, Chile, Germany (West and East), Great Britain, Israel, Latvia, Mexico, New Zealand, Northern Ireland, Philippines, Portugal, Slovenia, Spain, and the United States with the exceptions of Finland (ages 15-75), Switzerland (ages 15 and older), Ireland, Japan, Netherlands, and Russia (ages 16 and older), Denmark (ages 18-75), and Norway and Sweden (ages 18-80).

Data Collection Notes:

(1) The variable locations and lengths indicated in the codebook do not correspond to the variable locations and lengths indicated in the SAS and SPSS setup files, which directly correspond to the ASCII data file. Users should consult the setup files for variable locations and lengths that match the ASCII data file. (2) A weight variable is provided for use in analyzing data for the following countries: Austria, Canada, Chile, Czech Republic, Finland, Great Britain, Ireland, Northern Ireland, Philippines, Portugal, Russia, Slovenia, and Switzerland. Please see study descriptions for these countries for additional information on weighting procedures. (3) All country-specific frequency distributions in the codebook documentation are calculated from unweighted data. (4) Some value codes may have country-specific meanings. Moreover, the date of collection, source of data, sampling design, and weighting procedures varied by country. Users should consult the country-specific study descriptions in the codebook for further information regarding each. (5) Users are also strongly encouraged to visit the Web site for the International Social Survey Program at http://www.issp.org/ for additional information about this data series.

Sample:   The sampling frame varied by country. Variations of the following sampling techniques were used: simple random sampling, systematic random sampling, (two- or multi-stage) clustered or area probability random sampling, and (two- or multi-stage) stratified random sampling.
