Census Quality Survey Public Use Data File, 2001: [United States] (ICPSR 3901)
Principal Investigator(s): United States Department of Commerce. Bureau of the Census
Summary: This study was designed with the primary objective of producing a data file that could be used to bridge between the "single" race distribution in the 1990 Census and other household surveys and the "one or more races" distribution in Census 2000. The Census Quality Survey (CQS) was a nationally representative sample of about 55,000 households. Responding to a mailback questionnaire, one-half of the sample household respondents were asked to "mark one race," and dur... (more info)

Scope of Study
Summary: This study was designed with the primary objective of producing a data file that could be used to bridge between the "single" race distribution in the 1990 Census and other household surveys and the "one or more races" distribution in Census 2000. The Census Quality Survey (CQS) was a nationally representative sample of about 55,000 households. Responding to a mailback questionnaire, one-half of the sample household respondents were asked to "mark one race," and during a telephone recontact, these respondents were asked to "select one or more races." For the other half of the sample households, the reverse procedure was used. Data from these two contacts may be used to produce "bridging parameters" to compare race distributions collected under methodologies that request either one race or one or more races. In addition, Census 2000 records were matched to their respective CQS records (with a match success rate of 86 percent). The matched records may also be used to produce bridging estimates.

Geographic Coverage: United States
Time Period:
- 2001
Date of Collection:
- 2001
Universe: All persons and housing units in the United States in 2000.

Data Collection Notes:
The codebook accompanying Part 1 data and documentation distributed as Part 2 are provided by the principal investigator as Portable Document Format (PDF) files. The PDF file format was developed by Adobe Systems Incorporated and can be accessed using PDF reader software, such as the Adobe Acrobat Reader. Information on how to obtain a copy of the Acrobat Reader is provided on the ICPSR Web site.
Methodology
Sample: A nationally representative sample of about 55,000 households was drawn.
Data Source:
mailback questionnaires and telephone interviews
Extent of Processing: ICPSR data undergo a confidentiality review and are altered when necessary to limit the risk of disclosure. ICPSR also routinely creates ready-to-go data files along with setups in the major statistical software formats as well as standard codebooks to accompany the data. In addition to these procedures, ICPSR performed the following processing steps for this data collection:
- Created variable labels and/or value labels.
