The Speak To Your Health! Community Survey examines a wide range of issues related to individual and community health in Genesee County, Michigan. This biennial survey is designed by community, health department, and university partners and has been conducted in since 2003. Survey topics include physical and mental health, neighborhood safety, physical activity, nutrition, health care access, cancer, diabetes, sexual health, and smoking. The survey was conducted in 2003, 2005, 2007, 2009, and 2011.

Speak To Your Health! Community Surveys are designed by local organization and university partners to identify, monitor, and understand community health and concerns. The goals of the Speak To Your Health! Surveys are to:

  1. Understand residents' health-related behaviors and perceptions;
  2. Provide information for needs assessments and evaluations of projects;
  3. Identify community assets;
  4. Understand the associations between residents' health-related behaviors and perceptions, social determinants, and health outcomes;
  5. Provide training opportunities; and
  6. Develop a community health agenda that is widely disseminated and democratic.

Surveys were administered biennially to a random sample of adults 18 years and older in Genesee County, Michigan. Telephone interviews were conducted in 2003, 2005, 2007, 2009, and 2011. In 2011, mailed hard copy forms and online questionnaires were also administered.

The Speak To Your Health! survey model is a community-based participatory approach and was developed by the Genesee County Community Board of the Prevention Research Center of Michigan at the University of Michigan School of Public Health.

Random sample of adults 18 years and older in Genesee County, Michigan. The final sample size for each survey is:

  • 1,862 (2003 Survey)
  • 1,665 (2005 Survey)
  • 1,688 (2007 Survey)
  • 1,609 (2009 Survey)
  • 1,160 (2011 Survey)
