The UK Survey of Academics 2015, conducted by the partnership of Ithaka S+R, Jisc, and Research Libraries UK (RLUK), examines the attitudes and behaviors of academics at higher education institutions across the United Kingdom. Respondents were asked about resource discovery and access; research topics and practices; research dissemination, including data management and preservation; instruction and perceptions of student research skills; and the role and value of the academic library. Demographic information includes title, academic field, number of years of employment at the respondent's current college or university, number of years working in the respondent's field, age, and gender.

To provide universities and information services providers, such as academic libraries, learned societies, and scholarly publishers, with timely findings and analysis that help them plan for the future.

The population for this survey was academic staff at UK higher education institutions. To create the sample, investigators used a database of UK academics' contact information maintained by A-mail Academic, a UK-based marketing names list vendor. The A-mail Academic database was inspected and determined to contain a large sub-set of UK higher education academic staff that seemed broadly representative of the overall national population. Within the total population of academics for whom A-mail could provide email contact information, the survey included all of those who were (1) academic staff, defined as those listed within the A-mail database with the rank of "Head of Department/Faculty," "Professor," "Lecturer," "Associate Professor," "Director," "Researcher," and "Reader"; and (2) the UK higher education (HE) sector, defined as the HE institutions funded by HEFCE, HEFCW, SFC, as well as Queen's University Belfast and University of Ulster in Northern Ireland.
In order to bolster the sampling frame and increase the accuracy of the contact information, we invited individual HE institutions to partner with us in one of two potential ways: by providing a list of contact information for their academic staff; and/or by allowing us to send invitations to academic staff with a local institutional signatory. Three institutions provided lists of contact information, which we were able to use to supplement the A-mail list. In total, twelve UK HE institutions, representing a range of types of institutions, partnered with us to invite their academic staff using local communications and solicited responses with additional outreach at the local institutional level.
In total, 64,259 academics met the criteria for inclusion in the population for the Survey of Academics.

2016-12-02 ICPSR data undergo a confidentiality review and are altered when necessary to limit the risk of disclosure. ICPSR also routinely creates ready-to-go data files along with setups in the major statistical software formats as well as standard codebooks to accompany the data. In addition to these procedures, ICPSR performed the following processing steps for this data collection:

- Created online analysis version with question text.
- Checked for undocumented or out-of-range codes.
