Summary

The East Asian Social Survey (EASS) is a biennial social survey project that serves as a cross-national network of the following four General Social Survey type surveys in East Asia: the Chinese General Social Survey (CGSS), the Japanese General Social Survey (JGSS), the Korean General Social Survey (KGSS), and the Taiwan Social Change Survey (TSCS), and comparatively examines diverse aspects of social life in these regions. Since its 1st module survey in 2006, EASS produces and disseminates its module survey datasets and this is the harmonized data for the 4th module survey, called 'Network Social Capital in East Asia,' which was carried out in 2012 in the four countries.

Survey information in this module focuses on social networks and participation and attitudes toward various social organizations and events. Respondents were asked about common social interactions, family structures and relationships, their neighborhood environments, social support systems, and their trust toward a range of community members and institutions. Additionally, respondents were asked for their opinions on political issues, and about their participation and experience with voting in recent elections.

Demographic and other background information includes age, sex, marital status, religion, years of education completed, employment status, income, and household size and composition.

Study Purpose

The purpose of this study is to provide students and scholars in the social science community with integrated East Asian Social Survey datasets collected by coordinated efforts of the participating institutions in China, Japan, South Korea, and Taiwan.

Study Design

For information on study design, users should refer to the Original P.I. Documentation in the ICPSR Codebook, as well as visit the East Asian Social Survey (EASS) Web site.

Sample

Each participating country conducted its own multi-stage area probability sample. Specifically:

China: Four-stage probability proportional to size (PPS) sampling; stratified by comprehensive socio-economic indicator and population size.

Japan: Two-stage stratified random sampling; stratified by regional block and population size.

Korea: Multi-stage area probability sampling

Taiwan: Three-stage stratified PPS sampling: (1) Primary Sampling Unit (PSU) =township, (2) village (administrative unit under township), (3) individual person.

China: 18 and up Chinese citizens living in the China mainland

Japan: Men and women 20-89 years of age living in Japan

Korea: Adult citizens aged 18 and over who live in household in Korea

Taiwan: Population registers

The data was revised to correct mistakes in the following variables: Main status (MAINSTAT), Employment relationship (EMPREL), Working hours per week (WRKHRS), Occupation ILO,ISCO 1988 4-digit (ISCO88), Occupation ILO, ISCO 1988 4-digit: Last job (ISCO88l), Earnings from jobs (both main and part-time jobs): China (CN_RINC), Spouse's main status (SPMAINST), Spouse's employment relationship (SPEMPREL), Spouse's working hours per week (SPWRKHRS), Spouse's occupation ILO,ISCO 1988 4-digit (SPISCO88), Spouse's Earnings from jobs (CN_SPINC), Household income compared (RLTVHINC).

In addition, a variable on Japanese regional lock (JP_REG) was dropped due to privacy concerns.

2016-02-12 ICPSR data undergo a confidentiality review and are altered when necessary to limit the risk of disclosure. ICPSR also routinely creates ready-to-go data files along with setups in the major statistical software formats as well as standard codebooks to accompany the data. In addition to these procedures, ICPSR performed the following processing steps for this data collection:

  • Standardized missing values.
  • Created online analysis version with question text.
  • Checked for undocumented or out-of-range codes.

Weight

The data are not weighted, however, this collection contains the weight variable WEIGHT that should be used in analysis. Each participating country weighted the data differently.
