Summary

This poll, fielded in November 2013, is a part of a continuing series of monthly surveys that solicits public opinion on a range of political and social issues. Respondents were asked their opinions on the Obama administration, the economy, foreign policy, and health insurance law. Opinions were also asked about the federal budget deficit, privacy concerns, and holiday shopping attitudes. There are also a series of questions regarding cellular and land-line telephone use. Demographic information includes age, race, ethnicity, type of residential area (e.g. urban or rural), marital status, education level, household income, voter registration status, political party affiliation, political philosophy, and Tea Party affiliation.

Sample

This poll was conducted by telephone November 15-18, 2013 among 1,010 adults nationwide. Data collection was conducted on behalf of CBS News by Social Science Research Solutions of Media, PA. Phone numbers were dialed from samples of both standard land-line and cell phones. The error due to sampling for results based on the entire sample could be plus or minus three percentage points. The error for subgroups may be higher. Interviews were conducted in English and Spanish. This poll release conforms to the Standards of Disclosure of the National Council on Public Polls.

2015-08-05 ICPSR data undergo a confidentiality review and are altered when necessary to limit the risk of disclosure. ICPSR also routinely creates ready-to-go data files along with setups in the major statistical software formats as well as standard codebooks to accompany the data. In addition to these procedures, ICPSR performed the following processing steps for this data collection:

  • Created online analysis version with question text.
  • Checked for undocumented or out-of-range codes.

Weight

The data are not weighted. However, the dataset contains a weight variable (WEIGHT) that should be used in analyzing the data. According to the CBS News Web site, the data were weighted to match the United States Census Bureau breakdowns on age, sex, race, education, and region of the country. The data were also adjusted for the fact that people who share a telephone with others have less chance to be contacted than people who live alone and have their own telephones, and that households with more than one telephone number have more chances to be called than households with only one telephone number.
