Summary View help for Summary
This round of Eurobarometer surveys diverged from standard questions, instead focusing on youth attitudes toward drugs. During the fieldwork for Eurobarometer 57.2 (see Eurobarometer 57.2: Health Issues, Cross-Border Purchases, and National Identities, April-June 2002 [ICPSR 3543]), an oversample of young respondents, aged 15-24, was added to the basic sample, in order to obtain a total of at least 450 young respondents per country. An additional set of questions was administered to these young respondents eliciting responses on why people experiment with drugs, the main reasons why some people find it hard to stop using drugs, the consequences drug use may cause, the most effective ways of tackling drug-related problems, and the most dangerous drugs. They were also asked who they would turn to if they wanted to know more about drugs, whether it was easy to get drugs, whether people should be punished for using drugs, whether there should be drug testing at school or work, whether they had tried drugs or knew somebody who had, and whether they smoked cigarettes and drank alcohol. Demographic and other background information collected includes respondents' age, gender, nationality, marital status, left-right political self-placement, occupation, age at completion of education, household income, type and size of locality, and region of residence.

-
The original data collection was carried out by the European Opinion Research Group - EEIG on request of the European Commission.
-
The codebook and setup files for this collection contain characters with diacritical marks used in many European languages.
-
The documentation and/or setup files may contain references to Norway, but Norway was not a participant in this wave of Eurobarometer surveys. This collection contains no data for Norway.
-
The fieldwork dates in the data file for Belgium, East Germany, West Germany, Greece, Spain, France, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Austria, Portugal, Finland, Sweden, and the United Kingdom are not consistent with the fieldwork dates in the "Technical Specifications" section of the ICPSR codebook. 46 cases are coded as '0' "NA" for the following countries: Belgium (3 cases), Denmark (2 cases), and Great Britain (41 cases).
-
In the data collection instrument, the questions are numbered sequentially; however, in the codebook, the questions are numbered according to the data to correspond with Eurobarometer 57.2 (ICPSR 3543).
-
One respondent (ORIGINAL RESPONDENT ID 171018) who answered "DK" and three respondents (ORIGINAL RESPONDENT ID 171162, 171164, 171235) who answered "Other countries" to the question about nationality (Q.1) were permitted to complete interviews. If desired, these cases can be excluded from analysis.
