Summary View help for Summary
The Ithaka S+R Library Survey 2013 was an opinion-based survey of academic library deans and directors at four-year colleges and universities in the United States and Canada. The survey aimed to measure attitudes related to library direction and strategy, staffing levels, budgeting priorities for material resources, print and electronic collections management, and the role of the library in promoting information literacy. Respondents were also asked to detail strategies for enhancing information discovery services in order to meet the changing needs of students and researchers. Information regarding the size and type of each respondent's educational institution was also recorded.

Study Purpose View help for Study Purpose
This study aimed to understand library deans' and directors' perspectives with regard to setting goals for their libraries, making strategic planning decisions, and working with other administrators at their colleges and universities.
Study Design View help for Study Design
Ithaka S+R used the Carnegie Foundation's database of United States institutions as a base for the 2013 survey; this database was last updated in 2010. The list of all not-for-profit institutions from these classifications contained 1570 colleges and universities in the United States. From this list of 1570 institutions, 62 were excluded from the survey population, due to a variety of reasons (e.g., many of them did not operate their own library, some had no active library director, and some institutions had either closed or lost their accreditation). The survey was fielded to one individual at each institution who had oversight over the library and its staff.
The membership of the Association of Universities and Colleges of Canada (AUCC) was used as the base list for the Canadian survey; as of July 2013, this list contained 92 institutions. Nine of these institutions were excluded, either because they shared a library with a larger institution, or because they were very small, specialized institutions. The final list included library directors at 83 Canadian institutions.

2014-10-10 ICPSR data undergo a confidentiality review and are altered when necessary to limit the risk of disclosure. ICPSR also routinely creates ready-to-go data files along with setups in the major statistical software formats as well as standard codebooks to accompany the data. In addition to these procedures, ICPSR performed the following processing steps for this data collection:
- Created variable labels and/or value labels.
- Checked for undocumented or out-of-range codes.
