Summary

The New Jersey Dance Needs Assessment Project 2005 was conducted by the Research Center for Arts and Culture. The purpose of the study was to develop a comprehensive profile of New Jersey's dance workforce and to better understand the most critical needs confronting dance community. The dance community members were defined as the dancers and workers involved in dance, and included individual choreographers, performers, folk and traditional artists as well as administrators and educators, managers, dancers, costumers, and designers throughout the state of New Jersey. A total of 992 individuals were identified as dancers or dance workers in New Jersey and a paper survey was mailed to the identified individuals. The New Jersey Needs Assessment Project 2005 was funded by The Geraldine R. Dodge Foundation and The New Jersey State Council on the Arts.

Data Collection Notes

  1. Dance New Jersey contributed to the The New Jersey Dance Needs Assessment Project 2005 as the Initiator. Data collection for this survey was conducted by Research Center for Arts and Culture (RCAC). Funding for this study was provided by the Geraldine R. Dodge Foundation and the New Jersey State Council on the Arts.

  2. This data collection was previously distributed by the Cultural Policy and the Arts National Data Archive (CPANDA). The CPANDA Identification Number (study number) for this data collection is a00236. The CPANDA conducted the following processing steps for release of this collection: produced a codebook, checked for undocumented codes, performed consistency checks, provided frequencies, performed recodes, and reformatted the data.

  3. For additional information about this data collection, users are encouraged to refer to the Research Center for Arts and Culture Web site.

  4. To protect the anonymity of respondents, all variables that could be used to identify individuals have been masked or recoded. For details regarding these changes, please refer to the Codebook Notes provided in the ICPSR Codebook in this data collection.

  5. Due to the limit in the number of allowable columns of 256 in Excel 97-2003 (file ending, xls), the Excel file being distributed with this collection is in the later version of Excel (file ending of xlsx).

Study Purpose

The purpose of the study was to develop a comprehensive profile of New Jersey's dance workforce and to better understand the most critical needs confronting dance community.

Study Design

A total of 992 individuals were identified as dancers or dance workers in New Jersey. The list included 363 dance workers, 126 dancers, and 503 individuals who did not identify either dance workers or dancers. The lack of identification is because those individuals play multiple roles in dancing, teaching, managing and producing dance. Seventy seven percent of the individuals identified for the study lived in north and central New Jersey, and 23 percent lived in south Jersey. North is more active in dance because of its proximity to New York, and the geographic distribution of the respondents reflects that of dance activities in New Jersey. Paper survey was mailed to the identified individuals. RCAC had difficulties in identifying the addresses of the names they acquired through dance organizations, and 98 surveys were returned for bad addresses. To reach non-English speaking individuals, cover letter included a phone number for assistance in filling out the questionnaire in Spanish, Chinese, and Italian.
