Topics covered by the four waves of the survey, which were conducted in fall 2010, spring 2011, fall 2011 and spring 2012, include self-confidence, self-reported school grades, coping with anger and disagreements, gender roles in relationships, dating violence, bullying, communication with parents and teachers, alcohol use, dating and relationship history, social media use, age of dating partners, school and community resources for dating violence victims, and family background.

The evaluation sites were chosen based on the following criteria: implementation of Safe Dates (one of the two Start Strong adolescent dating abuse prevention curricula) to 7th grade students during the 2010-2011 school term; a minimum of 100 students per grade in order to have adequate statistical power; and feasibility of participation in the evaluation. Intervention schools were matched with comparison schools based on school size, the percent of students on free or reduced lunch, race/ethnicity, and metropolitan area characteristics. Eligibility criteria for students at participating schools included being able to complete the instrument in English and not being in a self-contained classroom.
