Start Strong: Building Healthy Teen Relationships

This longitudinal survey of middle school students was conducted as part of the evaluation of Start Strong: Building Healthy Teen Relationships, a national program to prevent teen dating violence and abuse by teaching 11- to- 14-year-olds about healthy relationships. Start Strong was was an initiative of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF) in collaboration with the Blue Shield of California Foundation and Futures Without Violence. Eight schools in three of the Start Strong sites participated in the evaluation, four implementing Start Strong and four which did not have any teen dating violence prevention programs. Topics covered by the four waves of the survey, which were conducted in fall 2010, spring 2011, fall 2011 and spring 2012, include self-confidence, self-reported school grades, coping with anger and disagreements, gender roles in relationships, dating violence, bullying, communication with parents and teachers, alcohol use, dating and relationship history, social media use, age of dating partners, school and community resources for dating violence victims, and family background.

The evaluation sites were chosen based on the following criteria: implementation of Safe Dates (one of the two Start Strong adolescent dating abuse prevention curricula) to 7th grade students during the 2010-2011 school term; a minimum of 100 students per grade in order to have adequate statistical power; and feasibility of participation in the evaluation. Intervention schools were matched with comparison schools based on school size, the percent of students on free or reduced lunch, race/ethnicity, and metropolitan area characteristics. Eligibility criteria for students at participating schools included being able to complete the instrument in English and not being in a self-contained classroom.

Students who were in the 7th grade in the 2010-2011 school year.

A total of 2,626 students in the eight evaluation schools were eligible to participate at baseline (wave 1). Parental consent and student assent were obtained from 1,517 students (58 percent). Ninety four percent of the 1,517 students responded in wave 1, 92 percent in wave 2, 86 percent in wave 3 and 83 percent in wave 4.

The data file contains computed scales on bullying; sexual harassment; parent-child communication; classroom climate; relationship satisfaction, support, criticism and dominance; and teen dating/partner violence victimization.
