Summary View help for Summary
The study analyzed the level of democracy achieved by 18 Latin American countries after 1977, between the transitions from authoritarian rule and 2004. Despite authoritarian interruptions in the past, one of the best predictors of the current level of democracy is the country's experience with competitive politics before 1978. We created original indicators to show that democratic trajectories are institutionalized through political parties and judicial institutions, and we documented the impact of regime legacies using a hybrid fixed-effects model.
