Ithaka S+R US Faculty Survey 2012 (ICPSR 34651) RSS

Summary:

The fifth cycle of the Ithaka S+R Faculty Survey queried a random sample of higher education faculty members in the United States to learn about their attitudes and practices related to research, teaching, and communicating. This collection differs from previous studies in that the questionnaire for this dataset was developed with input from an advisory committee, and the methodology was revised to take advantage of online distribution and responses. Demographic variables include the respondent's age, sex, title, primary academic field, how many years the respondent has worked at his or her current college or university, how many years the respondent has worked in his or her field, and whether the respondent primarily identifies as a researcher, teacher, or somewhere in between.

Universe:   This study covers academics at 4-year colleges and universities in the United States covering the major arts and sciences fields, and several major professional fields, but specifically excluding agriculture and the health sciences.

Methodology

Sample:   160,008 participants were selected via an "every nth" selection from listed sources of faculty members. Certain disciplines were over-sampled in order to allow analysis of subgroups of particular importance, with care taken to ensure that the over-sampling did not disproportionately affect overall results. Out of the 160,008 survey invitations that were sent, 5,261 responses were received and tabulated.

Extent of Processing:  ICPSR data undergo a confidentiality review and are altered when necessary to limit the risk of disclosure. ICPSR also routinely creates ready-to-go data files along with setups in the major statistical software formats as well as standard codebooks to accompany the data. In addition to these procedures, ICPSR performed the following processing steps for this data collection:

  • Checked for undocumented or out-of-range codes.
