The Japanese General Social Surveys (JGSS) Project is a Japanese version of the General Social Survey (GSS) project closely replicating the original GSS of the National Opinion Research Center at the University of Chicago. It provides data for analyses of Japanese society, attitudes, and behaviors, which makes possible international comparisons. Respondents were asked about employment, family and household composition, education, entertainment, technology and Internet usage, status and opinions on mental and physical health, alcohol and tobacco use, life satisfaction, addiction, proficiency with English, voting behavior, opinions on political and social issues, taxes and government expenditure, views on burial, family beliefs and issues, trust in people and institutions, membership in organizations, volunteering, perception of their personal appearance, receiving help from others, and their neighborhood environment. Demographic questions included age, sex, marital status, household income, and religious orientation and behavior.

  1. The Japanese General Social Surveys (JGSS) are designed and carried out by the JGSS Research Center at Osaka University of Commerce (Joint Usage/Research Center for Japanese General Social Surveys accredited by Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology), in collaboration with the Institute of Social Science at the University of Tokyo.

  2. While the Japanese General Social Survey (JGSS) is conducted solely in the Japanese language, the data files and codebooks are produced in Japanese and English. Please note that DS1 of the collection is the ICPSR-processed English language version of the data and documentation and DS2 of the collection is the original Japanese language version of the data and documentation provided by the principal investigators.

  3. More information about Japanese General Social surveys can be found on the Japanese General Social Survey Web site (Japanese language) or the Japanese General Social Survey Web site (English language).

2015-07-22 The Japanese language version of the data and documentation have been added to the collection.

2015-06-02 Per request of the Principle Investigators, the data have been updated to remove the variable PREF "Prefecture Name".

2014-02-11 Applying addition of PREF 'Prefecture' variable, as it was not applied in the previous update (2013-10-24) due to a processing error.

2013-10-24 After further assessment, the variable PREF 'Prefecture Name', previously dropped for perceived disclosure risk, is being included in the updated data files.

2013-06-05 ICPSR data undergo a confidentiality review and are altered when necessary to limit the risk of disclosure. ICPSR also routinely creates ready-to-go data files along with setups in the major statistical software formats as well as standard codebooks to accompany the data. In addition to these procedures, ICPSR performed the following processing steps for this data collection:

  • Standardized missing values.
  • Checked for undocumented or out-of-range codes.

The data contain one weight variable "WEIGHT" that users may wish to apply during analysis. For additional information on weighting, see the Weighting Information section of the Original P.I. Documentation within the ICPSR codebook.
