This data set contains comprehensive information on state legislative general election returns from 1967 through 2010. Each of the more than 300,000 observations refers to an individual candidate who ran for state legislative office. Variables include district designations, year and month of election, type of district (multimember, etc.), and candidate attributes such as incumbency status, party and vote total. The data come from five sources, three of which are ICPSR data collections (#8907, #3938, #21480); this data set is an update of these previous releases, through 2010.

The data were produced in Terre Haute, Indiana, by Indiana State University.
Sample: Comprehensive sample, i.e., all elements of the population were included as observations in the sample.
The data comes from five sources. The data from 1967 through 1989 comes from ICPSR study 8907 (directed by Malcolm Jewell), as updated by William Berry and Thomas Carsey in ICPSR study 3938. Most of the observations from 1990 through 2000 were provided by Richard Niemi, Lynda Powell, and James Snyder. A portion of the 2000 data and data for 2001 to 2003 were entered by research assistants working for Carsey and Berry. Data for 2004 to 2006 was provided by Carl Klarner, Richard Niemi and Lynda Powell, and data for 2007 to 2010 was collected from state Web sites by Carl Klarner. Improvements and corrections for all years were made by Carl Klarner in 2010-2011. Please refer to the Original P.I. Documentation in the ICPSR Codebook for more information.
