Eurobarometer 75.1: Energy in the European Union, Citizens' Rights, E-Communications, the Internal Market, and Carbon Dioxide Capture and Storage, February-March 2011 (ICPSR 34266)
Principal Investigator(s): European Commission
The Eurobarometer series is a unique cross-national and cross-temporal survey program conducted on behalf of the European Commission. These surveys regularly monitor public opinion in the European Union (EU) member countries and consist of standard modules and special topic modules. The standard modules address attitudes towards European unification, institutions and policies, measurements for general socio-political orientations, as well as respondent and household demographics. The special topic modules address such topics as agriculture, education, natural environment and resources, public health, public safety and crime, and science and technology.
This round of Eurobarometer surveys covers the following special topics: (1) energy in the EU, (2) citizens' rights, (3) e-communications, (4) the internal market, and (5) carbon dioxide capture and storage. Information was collected on potential policies and ways to reduce energy consumption, the performance of EU administration, opinions about citizens' most important rights, and report access, use, and providers of various technology and media, including the Internet. Additional information includes respondents' views on employment across EU countries, counterfeiting and piracy, the handling of carbon dioxide, and effects on climate change.
Demographic and other background information collected includes age, gender, nationality, marital status and parental relations, left-right political self-placement, occupation, age when stopped full-time education, household composition, ownership of a fixed or a mobile telephone and other durable goods, difficulties in paying bills, level in society, and Internet use. In addition, country-specific data includes type and size of locality, region of residence, and language of interview (select countries).

Data Types: survey data
Data Collection Notes:
The original data collection was carried out by TNS Opinion and Social on request of the European Commission between February 9 and March 8, 2011.
This collection is being released in two parts: Part 1 contains the orignial files provided by GESIS; Part 2 contains the ICPSR-processed files.
There is a discrepancy between the field work dates reported in the data and documentation. Please review the ICPSR codebook for more information.
The European Parliament (EP) question module QA1 to QA15 on "Women in the European Union" is only available as a separate data set (ICPSR 34594).
Module QC, "E-Communications", partly replicates the corresponding module, QA, of Eurobarometer 72.5 (ICPSR 29842).
Module QD, "Internal Market", partly replicates Flash Eurobarometer 263 (ZA5206; not available from ICPSR).
The codebook and setup files for this collection contain characters with diacritical marks used in many European languages.
Access to GESIS data and documentation, including the GESIS DOI, for Eurobarometer 75.1 can be found through the GESIS Data Catalogue. Additional information on the Eurobarometer Survey Series and the Eurobarometer data can be found at the GESIS Eurobarometer Web site and ZACAT, respectively.
Sample: Multistage national probability samples.
Weight: Please review the ICPSR codebook, "Variable Documentation" section, for information concerning individual weights; and the "Technical Specifications" section for general weighting information.
Mode of Data Collection: face-to-face interview
Extent of Processing: ICPSR data undergo a confidentiality review and are altered when necessary to limit the risk of disclosure. ICPSR also routinely creates ready-to-go data files along with setups in the major statistical software formats as well as standard codebooks to accompany the data. In addition to these procedures, ICPSR performed the following processing steps for this data collection:
- Checked for undocumented or out-of-range codes.
Original ICPSR Release: 2013-04-09
- 2013-08-29 Data for Part 1 and Part 2 now correspond to GESIS data version 6.0.0. The collection has been further processed by GESIS, and the SPSS, SAS, and Stata setup files, SPSS and Stata system files, SAS transport (CPORT) file, tab-delimited ASCII data file, and codebook have been updated.
