Ithaka S+R Library Survey 2010: Insights From U.S. Academic Library Directors (ICPSR 33862)

The Ithaka S+R Library Survey 2010 was an attitudinal survey of library directors at the libraries of institutions that grant degrees at the bachelor's level or higher. The survey focused on themes such as the future of the academic library, strategies library administrators are pursuing for their libraries, the management of print journal collections, the development of new digital collections, services provided to library patrons, the creation of new services to meet changing user needs, and practices for digital preservation. It also measured the attitudes of the library community towards e-books, open access, purchasing decisions, and collections management.

Study Purpose:   This study aims to help academic libraries and other members of the higher education community understand the changing role of the library and how to strategically adapt to an increasingly digital environment.

Time Method:   Longitudinal

Mode of Data Collection:   web-based survey

Description of Variables:   Variables include information about library and staff including position, balance of research and teaching at institutions, group memberships of libraries, library strategies, opinions and attitudes of staff, library budget, library services, and moving from print to online or electronic resources.

Extent of Processing:  ICPSR data undergo a confidentiality review and are altered when necessary to limit the risk of disclosure. ICPSR also routinely creates ready-to-go data files along with setups in the major statistical software formats as well as standard codebooks to accompany the data. In addition to these procedures, ICPSR performed the following processing steps for this data collection:

  • Created variable labels and/or value labels.
  • Checked for undocumented or out-of-range codes.

Restrictions: One or more files in this study are subjected to special restrictions, and questionnaires are protected under copyright; only ICPSR member users can login and download. The files in this study may not be used for any purpose other than non-commercial statistical reporting and analysis.
