This collection provides information on live births in the United States during calendar year 1981. The natality data in this file are a component of the vital statistics collection effort maintained by the federal government. Geographic variables of residence for births include the state, county, city, population, division and state subcode, Standard Metropolitan Statistical Area (SMSA), and metropolitan/non-metropolitan county. Other variables include the race and sex of the child, the age of the mother, mother's education, place of delivery, person in attendance, and live-birth order. The natality tabulations in the documentation include live births by age of mother, live-birth order, and race of child, live births by marital status of mother, age of mother, and race of child, and live births by attendant and place of delivery.

In preparing the data file for this collection, the National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS) has removed direct identifiers and characteristics that might lead to identification of data subjects. As an additional precaution, NCHS requires, under Section 308(d) of the Public Health Service Act (42 U.S.C. 242m), that data collected by the NCHS not be used for any purpose other than statistical analysis and reporting. NCHS further requires that analysts not use the data to learn the identity of any persons or establishments and that the director of NCHS be notified if any identities are inadvertently discovered. ICPSR member institutions and other users ordering the data from ICPSR are expected to adhere to these restrictions.

  1. (1) This collection has not been processed by ICPSR staff. ICPSR is distributing the data and documentation for this collection in essentially the same form in which they were received. When appropriate, documentation has been converted to Portable Document Format (PDF), data files have been converted to non-platform-specific formats, and variables have been recoded to ensure respondents' anonymity. (2) Per agreement with NCHS, ICPSR distributes the data file and technical documentation in this collection in their original form as prepared by NCHS. (3) The codebook is provided by the data producer as a Portable Document Format (PDF) file. The PDF file format was developed by Adobe Systems Incorporated and can be accessed using PDF reader software, such as the Adobe Acrobat Reader. Information on how to obtain a copy of the Acrobat Reader is provided on the ICPSR Web site.

Births occurring to United States citizens outside the United States are not part of these files. Data are obtained from certificates filed for births occurring in each state. During 1968-1971, data were obtained from a 50-percent sample of certificates. Starting in 1972, all records were included for states that participated in the Vital Statistics Cooperative Program (VSCP). The number of states participating in the VSCP increased from 6 in 1972 to 46 in 1984. Beginning in 1985, all states and the District of Columbia participated.

All live births in the United States during calendar year 1981.
