The Carnegie Middle East Governance and Islam Dataset includes both individual-level and country-level variables. Data on individual-level variables are drawn from 56 surveys carried out in 14 Arab countries, Turkey, and Iran. Taken together, a total of 82,489 men and women were surveyed. Almost all of the surveys involved face-to-face interviews. Most of the surveys were carried out either as the first, second, and third wave of the Arab Barometer, the third, fourth, fifth, and sixth waves of the World Values Survey, or a project on attitudes related to governance carried out by Mark Tessler with funding from the National Science Foundation. The dataset also includes four earlier surveys, as well as variables based on 34 time-specific country-level characteristics, for example, Freedom House political freedom ratings; labor force attributes compiled by the World Bank, the United Nations and others; natural resource rents, also compiled by the World Bank; ratings on the United Nations Human Development Index; freedom of religion indices developed by the United States Department of State; and linguistic, ethnic and religious fractionalization indices compiled in a private research project. Demographic variables include age, sex, education, employment status, marital status, religion, and income.

Longitudinal: Trend / Repeated Cross-section

Data for individual-level variables are drawn from 14 Arab countries (Algeria, Bahrain, Egypt, Iraq, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Libya, Morocco, Palestine, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Tunisia, Yemen), Turkey, and Iran. For information regarding country-level variables, users should refer to the County-Level Variables section of the Original P.I. Codebook, found in the Original P.I. 2016-04-28 An error was discovered in the data set and has been corrected. All other information about the study and documentation remain the same.

2015-11-24 The third wave of the Arab Barometer has been added to this dataset. This update includes data from Jordan and Palestine for the year 2012; Lebanon, Sudan, Yemen, Algeria, Tunisia, Egypt, Iraq, and Morocco for the year 2013; and Kuwait and Libya for the year 2014.

2014-08-28 The second wave of the Arab Barometer has been added to this dataset; the update includes data from Jordan, Palestine, and Lebanon for the year 2010, and data from Algeria, Yemen, Iraq, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Sudan, and Tunisia for the year 2011. The number of surveys that were merged into one data file has changed from 34 to 44, and the total number of respondents has increased from 54,894 to 67,680. Additionally, several variable names have changed since the last release, and a number of new variables have been added to the dataset.

2013-02-04 Value labels for the variable M21 have been corrected in the data collection.

2013-01-10 The Arab-Barometer Kuwait Survey from 2006 has been removed from this dataset. As a result, the number of surveys that were merged into one data file was changed from 35 to 34 by the P.I., which also changed the total number of respondents from 56,178 to 54,894.

2012-02-15 ICPSR data undergo a confidentiality review and are altered when necessary to limit the risk of disclosure. ICPSR also routinely creates ready-to-go data files along with setups in the major statistical software formats as well as standard codebooks to accompany the data. In addition to these procedures, ICPSR performed the following processing steps for this data collection:

  • Standardized missing values.
  • Checked for undocumented or out-of-range codes.
