Summary View help for Summary
The Japanese General Social Surveys (JGSS) Project is a Japanese version of the General Social Survey (GSS) project closely replicating the original GSS of the National Opinion Research Center at the University of Chicago. It provides data for analyses of Japanese society, attitudes and behaviors which make international comparisons possible. The objectives of the JGSS project are three-fold: (1) to collect and build cumulative data on general social surveys in Japan in a regular and consistent manner, thus enabling a time-series analysis; (2) to provide data for secondary analyses to researchers and university students in various social science fields; and (3) to provide data in a format useful for international comparative studies, research, and reports.

The Japanese General Social Surveys (JGSS) are designed and carried out by the JGSS Research Center at Osaka University of Commerce (Joint Usage/Research Center for Japanese General Social Surveys accredited by Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology), in collaboration with the Institute of Social Science at the University of Tokyo.
-
While the Japanese General Social Survey (JGSS) is conducted solely in the Japanese language, the data files and codebooks are produced in Japanese and English. Please note that DS1 of the collection is the ICPSR-processed English language version of the data and documentation and DS2 of the collection is the original Japanese language version of the data and documentation provided by the principal investigators.

More information about Japanese General Social surveys can be found on the Japanese General Social Survey Web site (Japanese language) or the Japanese General Social Survey Web site (English language).
Sample View help for Sample
Two-stage stratified random sampling; stratified by regional block (6) and population size (major cities, cities with population of 200,000 or more, cities with population of less than 200,000, and towns/villages). Number of survey points: 526. Number of samples at each survey point: 14-16. For additional information on sampling methods, see the Sampling Information section of the Original P.I. Documentation within the ICPSR codebook.

2015-07-21 The Japanese language version of the data and documentation have been added to the collection.
2015-06-02 Per request of the Principle Investigators, the data have been updated to remove the variable PREF "Prefecture Name".
2012-03-27 ICPSR data undergo a confidentiality review and are altered when necessary to limit the risk of disclosure. ICPSR also routinely creates ready-to-go data files along with setups in the major statistical software formats as well as standard codebooks to accompany the data. In addition to these procedures, ICPSR performed the following processing steps for this data collection:
- Standardized missing values.
- Performed recodes and/or calculated derived variables.
- Checked for undocumented or out-of-range codes.
Weight View help for Weight
The JGSS-2008 dataset includes the variable "WEIGHT" which can be used to weight the data for population estimates. This variable is produced by calculating the number of people which one respondent represents by taking into consideration the following factors: Sex (2 categories) x 10-year Age Group (7 categories) = 14 categories. Additional information can be found in the Weighting Information section of the Original P.I. Documentation within the ICPSR codebook.
