Data-Driven Learning Guides are a collection of instructional exercises that can be used to enhance teaching of core concepts in the social sciences. This learning guide investigates the influence of gender roles and attitudes about work and family on the household division of labor and childcare responsibilities. Research questions that can be explored using this learning guide include: who performs the work in the family and whether one parent takes on more responsibility for family work that the other, whether shared work is more common in dual-income families, how women's educational level and occupations relate to the household division of labor, what consequences the "second shift" (the household and childcare duties that follow the day's work for pay outside the home) may have for women's mental and physical wellbeing, and how the second shift may affect the careers and career choices of women. Crosstabulation and comparison of means are used for the analyses.
