Scope of Study
The Eurobarometer series is a unique cross-national and cross-temporal survey program conducted on behalf of the European Commission. These surveys regularly monitor public opinion in the European Union (EU) member countries and consist of standard modules and special topic modules. The standard modules address attitudes towards European unification, institutions and policies, measurements for general socio-political orientations, as well as respondent and household demographics. The special topic modules address such topics as agriculture, education, natural environment and resources, public health, public safety and crime, and science and technology.
This round of Eurobarometer surveys covers the special topics: national and European identity, and electromagnetic fields and health. Questions pertain to citizenship and origin of family, connections with other countries, knowledge of languages, mobility across countries in the next 10 years, attachment to other countries, regional identity, and belonging to majority and minority groups. Other questions address awareness of electromagnetic fields sources and their effects on health, as well as opinions about protection from these fields.
Demographic and other background information collected includes age, gender, nationality, marital status and parental relations, occupation, age when stopped full-time education, household composition, ownership of a fixed or mobile telephone and other goods, difficulties in paying bills, level in society, and Internet use. In addition, country-specific data includes type and size of locality, region of residence, and language of interview (select countries).
Subject Terms: attitudes, citizenship, cultural identity, cultural influences, electromagnetic radiation, European unification, European Union, family background, identity, information sources, national identity, native language, public health, public opinion, relocation, risk factors, self concept, social change, social integration

Unit of Observation: individual
Universe: In all, Eurobarometer 73.3 interviewed 26,602 citizens in the 27 countries of the European Union after the 2004/2007 enlargement (i.e. including the Accession Countries Romania and Bulgaria). All respondents were residents in the respective country, nationals and non-nationals but EU-citizens, and aged 15 and over. Respondents were expected to have sufficient command of one of the respective national language(s) to answer the questionnaire. Separate samples were drawn for Northern Ireland and East Germany.
Data Types: survey data
Data Collection Notes:
The original data collection was carried out by TNS Opinion and Social on request of the European Commission between March 12 and April 1, 2010.
This collection is being released in two parts. Part 1 contains the original files provided by GESIS and Part 2 the ICPSR-processed collection.
Data for all previously-embargoed variables are now available.
A split ballot was used for one or more questions in this survey. The variable V613 defines the separate groups.
The Consumer Empowerment (QA) module was surveyed in this Eurobarometer and Eurobarometer 73.2 (ICPSR 29761). However, the data for this module are not available in Eurobarometer 73.3 (ICPSR 30161). Module QA is only available as a separate merged data set in "Eurobarometer 73.2 and 73.3: Consumer Empowerment, February-April 2010" (ICPSR 34082).
The documentation and/or setup files may contain references to Croatia, Macedonia, Norway, Iceland, Switzerland, Turkey, and the Turkish Cypriot Community, but these countries were not participants in this wave of Eurobarometer surveys. This collection contains no data for Croatia, Macedonia, Norway, Iceland, Switzerland, Turkey, and the Turkish Cypriot Community.
Access to GESIS data and documentation, including the GESIS DOI, for Eurobarometer 73.3 can be found through the GESIS Data Catalogue. Additional information on the Eurobarometer Survey Series and the Eurobarometer data can be found at the GESIS Eurobarometer Web site and ZACAT, respectively.
Sample: Multistage national probability samples.
Weight: Please review the ICPSR codebook; "Variable Documentation" section for information concerning individual weights and the "Technical Specifications" section for general weighting information.
Mode of Data Collection: face-to-face interview
Extent of Processing: ICPSR data undergo a confidentiality review and are altered when necessary to limit the risk of disclosure. ICPSR also routinely creates ready-to-go data files along with setups in the major statistical software formats as well as standard codebooks to accompany the data. In addition to these procedures, ICPSR performed the following processing steps for this data collection:
- Checked for undocumented or out-of-range codes.
Original ICPSR Release: 2011-04-06
- 2013-02-15 Data for Part 1 and Part 2 now correspond to GESIS data version 3.0.0. The collection has been further processed by GESIS, and the SPSS, SAS, and Stata setup files, SPSS and Stata system files, SAS transport (CPORT) file, tab-delimited ASCII data file, and codebook have been updated. Of note, the data for this Eurobarometer study are being released in two parts. The first part includes original study materials supplied by GESIS which are being released in a zipped package. The second part includes study materials supplied by ICPSR.
