These data explore the needs of the homeless and transient people through questions designed to identify the types of problems the homeless face, the help necessary to solve these problems, and whether the needs of the homeless are being met. Respondents from Monterey County, California, shelters, hospitals, prisons, and outdoor areas were queried through telephone and face-to-face interviews. Major areas of investigation focused on respondents' residential histories, forms of personal identification, veteran status, sources of income, employment histories, informal support systems and relationships, nutrition, daily activities, physical health problems, emotional problems, alcohol or drug abuse problems, legal/criminal histories, safety concerns, and experiences with social services. Background information on respondents includes age, sex, ethnicity, education, marital status, employment status, place of birth, and income.
