Summary: This annual survey, fielded October to December 2009, was conducted in 33 countries to solicit public opinion on social and political issues. Respondents were asked whether they think 2010 will be better than 2009, whether the economy will be better in 2010 than it was in 2009, and whether unemployment will increase or decrease in the next 12 months. They were also queried on whether they thought that their present job was safe and how long they thought it would take to find a new job if they lost their current one. Demographic information includes sex, age, household income, education, employment status, and religious affiliation.

The data available for download are not weighted and users will need to weight the data prior to analysis.

Sample type, weights, and mode of collection vary by country, and detailed weighting information was not provided by the data producer. Please refer to the codebook for additional information on sampling, interviewing, and collection modes for each country.

The CASEID variable was created for use with online analysis.

The ID variable is unique to each country, not the study as a whole.

Weight: Two types of weights are applied one from the member country and the other by GIA, calculated on the basis of country population.

Mode of Data Collection: face-to-face interview, self-enumerated questionnaire, telephone interview, web-based survey

Extent of Processing: ICPSR data undergo a confidentiality review and are altered when necessary to limit the risk of disclosure. ICPSR also routinely creates ready-to-go data files along with setups in the major statistical software formats as well as standard codebooks to accompany the data.
