CBS News Monthly Poll #1, May 1998 (ICPSR 2547)
This poll is part of a continuing series of monthly surveys that solicit public opinion on the presidency and on a range of other political and social issues. Respondents were asked for their opinions of President Bill Clinton and his handling of the presidency, as well as their views on First Lady Hillary Clinton and independent counsel Kenneth Starr. Those queried were also asked to comment on the confidentiality of discussions between the president and White House aides, the importance to the nation of the allegations about Clinton's sexual misconduct, Clinton's guilt or innocence regarding the allegations of sexual harassment made by former Arkansas state employee Paula Jones, the concept of "executive privilege," and Starr's investigations into Whitewater and the alleged affair between former White House intern Monica Lewinsky and the president. A series of questions addressed the reliability of physical evidence, eyewitness testimony, and DNA testing at a trial. An additional subject covered the assassination of President John F. Kennedy, including Lee Harvey Oswald's responsibility, the evidence against Oswald, the possibility of an official cover-up, and whether the whole story would ever be told. Respondents were also asked how frequently they utilized computers and electronic mail and whether they were willing to participate in an on-line poll. Background information on respondents includes age, race, ethnicity, sex, education, marital status, religion, political party, political orientation, voter registration and participation history, family income, age of children in household, and stock market investments.

Scope of Study
(1) This collection has not been processed by ICPSR staff. ICPSR is distributing the data and documentation for this collection in essentially the same form in which they were received. When appropriate, hardcopy documentation has been converted to machine-readable form and variables have been recoded to ensure respondents' anonymity. (2) The codebook is provided as a Portable Document Format (PDF) file. The PDF file format was developed by Adobe Systems Incorporated and can be accessed using PDF reader software, such as the Adobe Acrobat Reader. Information on how to obtain a copy of the Acrobat Reader is provided through the ICPSR Website on the Internet.
Extent of Processing: ICPSR data undergo a confidentiality review and are altered when necessary to limit the risk of disclosure. ICPSR also routinely creates ready-to-go data files along with setups in the major statistical software formats as well as standard codebooks to accompany the data. In addition to these procedures, ICPSR performed the following processing steps for this data collection:
- Created variable labels and/or value labels.
Original ICPSR Release: 1998-09-17
- 2009-09-25 SAS, SPSS, and Stata setups have been added to this data collection.
- Citations exports are provided above.
