Scope of Study
Summary: This survey collected information on participants and nonparticipants in adult and continuing education activities throughout the 50 states and the District of Columbia. Conducted by the Bureau of the Census as part of the May 1969 and May 1972 Current Population Surveys (ICPSR 7935 and 7996), the adult education survey collected information on the respondent's age, race, sex, regular years of school completed, family income, work experience, occupation, veteran status, marital status, relationship to head of household, number of children in household, and geographic and urban/rural nature of area of residence. The socioeconomic and demographic information can be linked to data on adult education activities in PARTICIPATION IN ADULT EDUCATION, 1969: [UNITED STATES] (ICPSR 2287) and PARTICIPATION IN ADULT EDUCATION, 1972: [UNITED STATES] (ICPSR 2289).

Sample: National probability sample. Respondents 17 years of age and older were included, because the limit for compulsory school attendance in most states is 16 years of age in 1969 and 1972.
Data Source:
United States Department of Commerce. Bureau of the Census. CURRENT POPULATION SURVEY: ANNUAL DEMOGRAPHIC FILE, 1969 (ICPSR 7560) and CURRENT POPULATION SURVEY: ANNUAL DEMOGRAPHIC FILE, 1972 (7563)
Extent of Processing: ICPSR data undergo a confidentiality review and are altered when necessary to limit the risk of disclosure. ICPSR also routinely creates ready-to-go data files along with setups in the major statistical software formats as well as standard codebooks to accompany the data. In addition to these procedures, ICPSR performed the following processing steps for this data collection:
- Checked for undocumented or out-of-range codes.
Version(s)
Original ICPSR Release: 1998-08-24
Version History:
- 2006-01-18 File CB2288.ALL.PDF was removed from any previous datasets and flagged as a study-level file, so that it will accompany all downloads.
- 2003-02-06 New record layouts and SAS and SPSS data definition statements were created and added to the collection.
