This survey of museums and related institutions was conducted in 1979 to develop a listing for the Institute of Museum Services (IMS). A museum is defined as an institution organized on a permanent basis for essentially educational or aesthetic purposes, which, utilizing a staff, owns or uses tangible objects, whether animate or inanimate, cares for these objects, and exhibits them to the public on a regular basis. This was the first time a complete survey of the entire museum universe was completed. Questions covered demographic characteristics of the person in charge of the museum, control and type of institution, number of employees, weeks open per year, annual attendance, and operating expenditures.
