Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System (IPEDS): Fall Enrollment, 1986 (ICPSR 2221)

Principal Investigator(s):

Summary:

The Fall Enrollment survey is conducted annually by the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES) as part of the Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System (IPEDS). The survey collects data that describe the status of student participation in various types of postsecondary institutions. The data are collected by sex for six racial/ethnic categories as defined by the Office for Civil Rights (OCR). There are two parts included in this survey. Part A, Enrollment Summary by Racial/Ethnic Status, provides enrollment data by race/ethnicity and sex and by level and year of study of the student. Part C, Clarifying Questions, supplies information on students enrolled in remedial courses, extension divisions, and branches of schools, as well as numbers of transfer students from in-state, out of state, and other countries.

Data Collection Notes:

(1) This survey of Fall Enrollment was the first conducted under the IPEDS title, which replaced the Higher Education General Information Survey (HEGIS). (2) The file consists of data derived from three distinct survey instruments. (3) The codebook and data collection instruments are provided as a Portable Document Format (PDF) file. The PDF file format was developed by Adobe Systems Incorporated and can be accessed using PDF reader software, such as the Adobe Acrobat Reader. Information on how to obtain a copy of the Acrobat Reader is provided through the ICPSR Website on the Internet.

Methodology

Sample:   The survey was mailed to 7,669 postsecondary institutions, i.e., four-year, two-year, and public less-than-two-year institutions, and to a sample of less-than-two-year private institutions.

Data Source:

self-enumerated questionnaires

Extent of Processing:  ICPSR data undergo a confidentiality review and are altered when necessary to limit the risk of disclosure. ICPSR also routinely creates ready-to-go data files along with setups in the major statistical software formats as well as standard codebooks to accompany the data. In addition to these procedures, ICPSR performed the following processing steps for this data collection:

  • Checked for undocumented or out-of-range codes.
