Summary View help for Summary
This collection provides information on a sample of live births in the United States during the calendar years 1964-1966. The natality data in this file are a component of the vital statistics collection effort maintained by the federal government. Geographic variables of residence for births include the state and county, and metropolitan/nonmetropolitan county. Other variables include health insurance coverage, the place of delivery, whether there was an attendant at birth, legitimacy of the child, live-birth order, and the type of delivery. Demographic variables include each sample child's sex and race, birth weight, date of birth, date of death, the parents' age and race, date of birth, education level, place of birth, family income, as well as the mother's marital history, household composition, and employment status during pregnancy. Information was also collected on the sex, date of birth, and date of death of the mother's previous births.

Restrictions View help for Restrictions
In preparing the data files for this collection, the National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS) has removed direct identifiers and characteristics that might lead to identification of data subjects. As an additional precaution, NCHS requires, under Section 308(d) of the Public Health Service Act (42 U.S.C. 242m), that data collected by NCHS not be used for any purpose other than statistical analysis and reporting. NCHS further requires that analysts not use the data to learn the identity of any persons or establishments and that the director of NCHS be notified if any identities are inadvertently discovered. ICPSR member institutions and other users ordering data from ICPSR are expected to adhere to these restrictions.

Weight View help for Weight
(1) The variable ANNUAL_WGT (Annual Weight Factor) in this dataset refers to a proportion, but the values are whole numbers. According to the original documentation, each record was assigned a weight factor based on the mother's age, color [race], and live birth order from the U card data. (2) The variable WEIGHT (Three Year Average Weight) in this dataset refers to a proportion, but the values are whole numbers. According to the original documentation, each record was assigned a three year average weight factor based on the mother's age, color [race], and live birth order from the U card data. This weight should be used when tables for the three years combined data are run.
