Scope of Study

Summary:   Founded in 1962, the Inter-university Consortium for Political and Social Research (ICPSR) archives and facilitates online public access to social science data. The ICPSR Data Archiving Report: Data Dissemination Activity chronicles the yearly progress of ICPSR's data dissemination project by providing information on all data downloads that were performed by users, and all requests received for alternative media formats (such as CD-ROM). The Downloads information includes the number of data collections, datasets, and files downloaded and the name of the institution where the download was initiated. Alternative Media Format Requests also includes the number of data collections, datasets, and files requested and is organized according to the Internet domain (edu, com, gov, net, etc.) from which the request originated.

Subject Terms:   administrative records, data, information dissemination, information services, social sciences

Data Types:   administrative records data, aggregate data

Data Collection Notes:

These data are part of ICPSR's annual reporting activities. ICPSR began producing data release and data dissemination statistics as separate data collections in 2006. Prior to 2006, these data were included as appendices in the ICPSR Annual Report for each year. Users who wish to access the pre-2006 statistics should consult ICPSR ANNUAL REPORTS (ICPSR 4006).

Methodology

Extent of Processing:  ICPSR data undergo a confidentiality review and are altered when necessary to limit the risk of disclosure. ICPSR also routinely creates ready-to-go data files along with setups in the major statistical software formats as well as standard codebooks to accompany the data. In addition to these procedures, ICPSR performed the following processing steps for this data collection:

  • Performed consistency checks.
