The State of the Cities Data Systems (SOCDS) was created by the Office of Policy Development and Research (PD&R) in the United States Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). SOCDS provides data for individual metropolitan areas, central cities, and suburbs. Via the SOCDS home page, users can access detailed demographic and economic characteristics of the United States population using decennial Census data from 1970 to 2000. SOCDS also provides: (1) the latest available unemployment rates, (2) information on jobs, business establishments, and average pay in the 1990s, (3) data on violent and property crime rates collected by the FBI, (4) information on local building permits, and (5) information on city and suburban government finances.
