National Congregations Study (NCS) United States (ICPSR 122)
Principal Investigator(s): Chaves, Mark
This dataset is housed at the American Religion Data Archive (ARDA). Conducted in conjunction with the 1998 General Social Survey (GSS), using hypernetwork sampling, the NCS data is the first nationally representative sample of American congregations. The file contains 1,236 cases, with 358 variables. Information was gathered about the general denominational affiliation and religious tradition of each congregation, as well as the number of attendees, race and gender of leadership, language and music used, and social and religious rules and norms. Through the ARDA site, the study's individual variables are accessible with a keyword search, and variable-level custom analysis is also available.
