The Current Population Survey (CPS) is a joint project between the Bureau of Labor Statistics and the Bureau of the Census. It is a survey of about 50,000 households conducted monthly by the Bureau of the Census and is the primary source of information on the labor force characteristics of the population of the United States. Comprehensive information is given on the employment status, occupation, and industry of persons 15 years old and older. Additional data are available concerning weeks worked and hours per week worked, reason not working full-time, total income, and income components. Information on demographic characteristics, such as age, sex, race, class, household relationship, and Hispanic origin, is available for each person in the household. Supplemental questions to produce estimates on a variety of topics including school enrollment, income, previous work experience, health, employee benefits, and work schedules are also often added to the regular CPS questionnaire. At the CPS Web site users can obtain an overview of the survey, as well as information on history and concepts of the survey, methodology and documentation, microdata and table access via FERRET, publications, information about the monthly survey and the supplements, information on related surveys and programs, and a search function providing three ways to search: by publication keyword, by document, or across data using FERRET.
