Scope of Study

Summary:

The total number of business establishments, mid-March employment figures, and first quarter and annual payrolls are supplied in this collection at the county, state, and national levels. Also provided are data on the number of establishments by employment-size class.

All business establishments with one or more paid employees in the 50 states, the District of Columbia, and Puerto Rico, excluding agriculture production, railroad, government, or household employment.

Methodology

Data Source:

(1) United States Bureau of the Census economic surveys, the Annual Company Organization Survey, and the Annual Survey of Manufacturers, and (2) United States Internal Revenue Service Quarterly Payroll Files

Extent of Processing:

All archived data undergo a confidentiality review and are altered when necessary to limit the risk of disclosure. The archive also routinely creates ready-to-go data files along with setups in the major statistical software formats as well as standard codebooks to accompany the data. In addition to these procedures, the archive performed the following processing steps for this data collection:

  • Standardized missing values.
