Scope of Study

Summary:

The purpose of this data collection was to provide a current sampling frame for two portions--nursing and related-care homes and facilities for the mentally retarded--of the Institutional Population Component of the 1987 National Medical Expenditure Survey. Data include type of ownership of facility, number of beds, age group served, types of persons served, and descriptions of facilities (i.e., skilled nursing home, intermediate care facility, licensed but not certified nursing home, long-term care wing/unit of a licensed hospital, related care facility, and foster home).

Nursing and related-care homes and facilities for the mentally retarded in the United States and District of Columbia selected from the 1982 National Master Facility Inventory (NMFI) plus any new facilities added through April 1984.

The data contain blanks and at signs (@). The survey contains a variable listing persons 65 years and older served by the long-term care places.

Methodology

Sample:

National probability sample, yielding approximately 26,000 nursing and related care homes and approximately 14,500 facilities for the mentally retarded.

Extent of Processing:

All archived data undergo a confidentiality review and are altered when necessary to limit the risk of disclosure. The archive also routinely creates ready-to-go data files along with setups in the major statistical software formats as well as standard codebooks to accompany the data. In addition to these procedures, the archive performed the following processing steps for this data collection:

  • Created variable labels and/or value labels.
