Scope of Study

Summary:

The total number of business establishments, mid-March employment figures, and first-quarter and annual payrolls are supplied in these datasets at the county, state, and national levels. Also provided are data on the number of establishments by employment-size class.

Data Collection Notes:

The United States summary data are contained in one file. The state- and county-level data are each contained in nine files, with one file corresponding to a Census Division. There is one file containing Standard Industrial Classification codes.

(1) United States Bureau of the Census economic censuses, the Annual Company Organization Survey, and the Annual Survey of Manufactures, and (2) United States Internal Revenue Service Quarterly Payroll File
