Higher Education General Information Survey (HEGIS) Series

Scope of Study

Summary:

The Higher Education General Information Survey (HEGIS) series was designed to provide comprehensive information on various aspects of postsecondary education in the United States and its territories (American Samoa, Guam, Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands, and the Marshall Islands) and Department of Defense schools outside the United States. Data are available for both public and private two-year and four-year institutions. The HEGIS Institutional Characteristics component for 1977-1978 sought data on basic characteristics from institutions of higher education. The data include information on name, address, and telephone number of the institution as well as information about accreditations, state and city demographics, calendar system, program types, enrollment figures, administrative officers, student services, tuition and fees, room and board, and admission requirements.

Subject Terms:

accreditation (institutions), admissions policies, colleges, community colleges, education costs, educational administration, educational administrators, educational programs, higher education, school enrollments, student financial aid, universities

Geographic Coverage:

American Samoa, Guam, Marshall Islands, Puerto Rico, United States, Virgin Islands of the United States, Global

Time Period:

  • 1977--1978

Date of Collection:

  • 1977--1978

Universe:

All postsecondary institutions in operation during 1977-1978 in the United States and its territories (American Samoa, Guam, Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands, and the Marshall Islands) and Department of Defense schools outside of the United States.

Data Types:

survey data

Data Collection Notes:

(1) The original data received from NCES was a hierarchical data file with multiple records per case. The data have been reformatted into a rectangular file with one record per case, in order to be compatible with the current statistical software packages. (2) The accreditation code variables (ACCDCD#) in the original data file supplied by NCES were coded as PIC S9(3) COMP-3. ICPSR has recoded these values into their ASCII numeric equivalents.

Methodology

Mode of Data Collection:

self-enumerated questionnaire

Extent of Processing:

All archived data undergo a confidentiality review and are altered when necessary to limit the risk of disclosure. The archive also routinely creates ready-to-go data files along with setups in the major statistical software formats as well as standard codebooks to accompany the data. In addition to these procedures, the archive performed the following processing steps for this data collection:

  • Checked for undocumented or out-of-range codes.

Access and Availability

Note:

Detailed file-level information (such as record length, case count, and variable count) is listed in the file manifest.

Original ICPSR Release:

1984-05-03

Version History:

  • 2005-11-14 The data have been reformatted into a rectangular file with one record per case. The accreditation code variables (ACCDCD#) in the original data file supplied by NCES were coded as PIC S9(3) COMP-3. ICPSR has recoded these values into their ASCII numeric equivalents. An ICPSR codebook, SAS, SPSS, and Stata setup files have been added to the study. The title of this study has been altered.
